If your grip is too close to the end of your index finger rather than closer to that first knuckle you will be shoving that joint sideways or to it's stop point. Depending on your particular pick hold. That will definitely add tension to that part of your index finger.

One thing I'm sure that's causing this is the extreme bend of that finger necessitated by some mandolin chords (Dm & that aggravating Fmaj chord shape 5-3-0-1).

网页2011年5月20日 — Anyways, the pain is strongest when I fully bend the finger at that knuckle. The pain feels very much like a bruise on the bottom-right side of the knuckle. My plan is to cut-back on playing for a couple of days (or maybe just fret in the first position, on frets #3 and higher - working with just the other three fingers).

网页2022年8月19日 — Re: New player: a lot of pain in the knuckle of my left hand. Fret your mandolin at the 3rd fret on each set of strings and look at the space between the first fret and the bottom of the string. It should be minimal or next to nothing. If it is higher you are working too hard.

网页2005年2月24日 — Lately I've been experiencing pain in my index finger knuckle (big knuckle at base of finger)on my fretting hand. It really hurts when hitting the E string in the first few positions. It seems that in order to hit these notes on the E string on the skinny part of the neck, the index finger bends in a tight, awkward fashion.

I quit playing guitar and mandolin for that period of time and I'm just starting to play again. I think for me that part of the problem was playing a one finger A chord on guitar for 30 years.

It also felt like my finger just did not fit in the joint right, but no matter what I tried, it wouldn't help. The soreness goes away after a couple of hours, however it never curls or feels right. No swelling or anything.
