An investor in Lifeway for more than two decades, Danone has made a bid to buy the US kefir maker – beset by family difficulties – outright.

Danone is attempting to acquire Lifeway Foods, the US-based kefir maker in which the French giant holds a minority stake. The Alpro and Activia brands owner is a long-time shareholder in Lifeway, currently holding a 23.

MORTON GROVE, ILL. — Fermented dairy manufacturer Lifeway Foods, Inc. shared that it received an “unsolicited, non-binding” proposal from Danone North America PBC to acquire all of the outstanding shares of the kefir maker’s common stock that aren’t already owned by Danone.

The French dairy giant offers about $280 million to buy the 77% of the stock it doesn’t already own in the American kefir company.
