Dr·Philips（菲利普斯博士）研究发现：成人对AKG的摄入充足，而在衰老阶段AKG的摄入无法满足机体需要。在细胞代谢中，不能利用TCA循环中的AKG合成氨基酸，为此，必须提供AKG作为纯膳食补充剂。研究表明，AKG在小肠近端比远端的吸收率更高，而且低pH、亚铁离子或硫酸根离子可以增强AKG的吸收。
