The next morning, Sept. 16, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists on a helicopter overflight confirmed that a small eruption occurred on Kīlauea’s middle East Rift Zone between Makaopuhi Crater and Nāpau Crater.

Kīlauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, was spotted erupting Tuesday morning in a remote area near Makaopuhi Crater in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. As of 5:55 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey has issued an orange "watch" advisory and said there is no immediate threat to life or infrastructure.
